Matthew Unsworth is a highly experienced civil engineering professional with over 10 years’ industry experience, having served as both a site engineer and planning engineer. His experience spans a diverse range of sectors, including wastewater, water infrastructure, highways, piling, residential and industrial developments, bridges, tunnels, government works and marine construction. He has built broad expertise across engineering, commercial, and planning functions while working in diverse project environments.
Matthew is well-versed in commercial projects and has extensive knowledge of contract administration, construction sequencing, design processes and technical specifications. He is experienced in conducting delay analyses on live projects, identifying acceleration strategies to mitigate schedule slippage and supporting programme recovery. He is skilled in the preparation and analysis of project schedules, identification of constraints and the production of detailed monthly progress reports.
- Worked as site engineer on a ~£20 million project encompassing the construction of a flood storage basin, a new bridge over a diverted river, access roads and multiple FRC structures to form a new river channel. Responsibilities included setting out works, conducting material take-offs, ensuring compliance with CDM regulations, assisting project managers and maintaining comprehensive site records.
- Lead planner on a ~£40 million Environment Agency scheme, responsible for real-time analysis of delay events and identification of accelerative measures to mitigate programme slippage. The project involved complex construction activities, including FRC works, piling and deep excavations across multiple concurrent work fronts, where effective planning was critical to minimising delays.
- Appointed as the planner for a dockyard refurbishment scheme, with responsibility for leading construction sequencing and change management. The project involved the refurbishment of dock infrastructure and the clearance of silt to facilitate the safe mooring of vessels.
- Served as assistant engineer with responsibility for ensuring compliance with CDM (Construction Design and Management) regulations. Provided support to the site engineer and project manager in the execution of day-to-day project activities and site operations.
- Provided delay analysis support to a Tier 2 contractor, including the development of retrospective programmes to substantiate a delay claim arising from client-driven design changes. Contributed specialised expertise in forensic planning and programme impact assessment.
- Primarily responsible for setting out works on a new promenade and main carriageway in Morecambe, including overstep access, installation of pre-cast wall units and road and footpath construction. Additional duties included managing subcontractors and site operatives, as well as overseeing quality assurance processes for the installation of pre-cast wall elements.
