With over 15 years experience in the construction industry, Michael Custance is an internationally experienced Chartered Quantity Surveyor having worked on Projects in the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, India, and the United Kingdom.

Through this experience he has developed a detailed knowledge of FIDIC based forms of contract and draws upon that knowledge when analyzing or preparing claims for contract compliance. Michael is especially adept at dissecting voluminous project records to identify causation events and can clearly illustrate and communicate their impact on project delivery.

Michael’s expertise includes the preparation of delay, disruption and variation claims as he is well versed in the prime methodology options available to disputants. His project experience allows him to readily identify essential contemporaneous evidence necessary to achieve successful results for contractors and owners in dispute resolution proceedings.

Selected Project Experience
  • Msherieb Phase 1C, Qatar: Engaged as Head Contract/Claims Manager to administer a $600m FIDIC based contract, which resulted in multiple disputes, multi-faceted variations, claims for prolongation, acceleration, disruption and the associated quantum. Leader, responsible for the preparation of these claims insuring that they were supported by detailed expert level forensic loss of productivity and delay analysis, which were communicated through substantive entitlement narratives. Management of internal planning and commercial teams to insure the recordation of contemporary documentation to support the claims as well as maintaining project controls.
  • Hamad International Airport, Qatar: Claims Manager accountable for detailed and substantive claims preparation and submission including scheduling, narration and presentation. Achievement of extensions of time across multiple milestones combined with the recovery of the associated prolongation costs.
  • Mumbai International Airport T2, India: Commercial management role, responsible for preparation, negotiation and settlement of variation, extension of time and disruption claims. Accountable for delivering work packages to predetermined budgets that included the fabrication and installation of 500 tons of primary and secondary steel, 40.000m2 of wall cladding, and Corian cladding to over 1200 columns using in house factory fabrication.
  • Jumeriah Lakes Towers, UAE: Worked in a claims management role for the Owner, DMCC, across four work packages. Worked with the quantity surveyors and planning department to assess contractor variation and extension of time claims.
